Organic chemistry

Question

Your task is to identify an unknown compound in a pill (analyte X) that was seized by the police and is suspected to be an illicit drug. The identification is expected to be performed using a combination of advanced analytical methods: IR spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, NMR spectroscopy, and Mass Spectrometry (MS). The further INSTRUCTIONS and DATA you need for this question are provided in separate, appropriately named documents. You can find them in the Assessment section of the module site on Blackboard.

  • Vibrational Spectroscopy (10 marks)
  • Mass Spectrometry (5 marks)
  • NMR (5 marks)
  • Identification of the unknown compound (5 marks)

In your answer provide:

  • Correct and fully labelled plots of both IR and Raman spectra.
  • Correct tentative assignment of the main bands on both spectra.
  • A brief (~50 words) narrative of your thought process. This includes rationalization of inclusion and exclusion of the main bands on both spectra.

In your answer provide:

  • A correct interpretation of all relevant fragments.
  • Correct and well-presented (e.g. drawn in Chemsketch) structures of all interpreted fragments.
  • A brief (~50 words) narrative of your thought process.

In your answer provide:

  • Correct assignment/interpretation of signals in both 13C and 1H NMR spectra.
  • A brief (~50 words) narrative of your thought process.

In your answer provide:

  • Correct identification of the unknown compound.
  • Well-written, concise (~200 words), and clear explanation regarding the elements enabling the identification.

In your work, consider Appendices 1-6 that contain a number of relevant information on vibrational, mass, and NMR spectroscopies.
