The only thing that is certain is that the plane crash landed onto the island after it was struck, fell apart and went down in flames. The trigger behind the strike is never specifically described, only a brief mention is given in Chapter 1 with the following words:"We was attacked!""When we was coming down I looked through one of them windows. I saw the other part of the plane. There were flames coming out of it."
One can only speculate that since the boys were being evacuated during a war and the pilot mentioned the airport they had just left had been bombed, a fighter plane may of fired at them. But the factual conclusion is simply that the book chose not to reveal this information. This puts the focus squarely on how the boys progress from the outcome of the tragic event rather than going into detail about any back-story of how it came to be.
