Objective: Consider the steps that can be taken to gain a better perception in the community and avoid what things might cause this perception to be tainted.

It important for officers to understand the perceptions of the citizens served and to correct improper perceptions and to remedy perceptions which are valid but negative. In essence, this means winning the hearts and minds of those served. Put another way, we need to think about sustaining positive community relations.

• Prepare a paper 2 examining the police use of force. 
  • Start with what force is, how the use of force continuum works, what are the perceptions of the use of force by the public and how does the media play a role.
  • Consider the Constitutional aspects of force and include case law which sets the parameters on the use of force.
