9/21 Presentation 4: Choose how you would utilize stone and masonry construction in the design of a structure. An example would be the fascia of a building. Additionally, how would you incorporate a ferrous metal in your design? Be sure to consider how this design would look where neighboring structures are evident. Choose whatever presentation format

Slide 2: Stone in Architecture
Stone is extremely heavy, which makes it quite inconvenient compared to other building materials. It&rsquo;s necessary to begin with a very solid base, as stone buildings will have problems if they&rsquo;re built on mud or soft ground. It&rsquo;s also hard to create large buildings with stone, since it&rsquo;s so heavy, but it can be done. The pyramids were made of stone, after all.
Generally, a stonemason is required to ensure that stone buildings are constructed correctly and safely. Working with stone requires special training and tools. For example when building a stone wall, or just in general when working with stone for masonry, the first step is to build a proper foundation. The more permanent you want your wall, the more of it you must bury forever underground. The base of any wall expected to last a few hundred years must rest on bedrock if possible, otherwise on solid subsoil. Also one must consider the dimensions of this project.  The more width you build into your wall per unit of height, the bigger its footprint, and the more stable it will be. So dig your trench a good bit wider than the base of the wall and make it as deep as you can manage. Now that you have a solid foundation one must consider whether or not they are building against an existing frame. Depending on what the frame is certain precautions must be taken e.g. if using plywood or wall sheeting a weather resistant barrier is required or if the frame is concrete the stone can be applied directly as long as there is no form oil on the surface. One last consideration to make is the ends. You want the ends to hold up unaided; theres no more wall beyond them to rest against. So save the biggest and best square and long stones you can for ends.
 
Slide 3: Using Ferrous Metals
&ldquo;Ferrous&rdquo; means iron, so ferrous metals are metals with iron, such as steel and cast iron.
Steel structures are common parts of buildings. The entire structure of buildings can be constructed out of steel by making a steel frame of posts and whatnot. The face of the building can be made of any material, or the structure can be left as is (specialized buildings).
The exteriors of buildings can also be made of steel, though usually this means the structure is steel too. Steel plates can cover all faces of a building quite easily. This produces a modern look, and chrome can be used to make it look like it&rsquo;s from the future.

Typically, steel buildings are made from many pieces of steel, each constructed separately. This is very convenient, because there&rsquo;s no need to do all the construction on the construction site. Everything is held together with nails, screws, bolts, etc. The only concern is that, when preparing the design, each individual piece has to be accounted for.
Iron without carbon can also be used, but the look is generally dark. Can complement stone fairly well. The most modern combination of steel or iron being used with stone architecturally is the stone wall/ iron fence combination. The preparations for this are similar to the stone wall given previously however several changes need to be made. One is most likely the fact building the iron fence directly into the stone wall would be very difficult thus a frame is required. Depending on what the frame is will change the parameters for the project
Slide 5: Fitting in
Stone exteriors go well with other stone exteriors. They also go fairly well with wood, and generally fit in with buildings that are old-fashioned. Stone doesn&rsquo;t go well with buildings with lots of metal and glass, generally. Urban areas don&rsquo;t generally have buildings with stone exteriors due to this.
 
Steel exteriors fit with modern looks. Steel goes well with glass, but doesn&rsquo;t fit with buildings that have a traditional look to them, and does not complement stone at all. You generally can&rsquo;t use iron and steel together.
