Choose how you would utilize structural clay tile in the design of any type of structure.
 
Slide 2: What is structural clay tile?
Structural clay tile is also called structural terra cotta, hollow structural tile, clay block, and a few other names.
To make structural clay tile, clay is fired in a kiln to form a brick, much like concrete bricks. The inside is hollow, and divided into cells for strength. There&rsquo;s usually ribbing on the exterior.  The exterior is also typically covered with stucco, a type of coating. (Typical blocks are pictured to the right. Cells and ribbing are shown.)

Structural clay tile was mostly used in the early 20th century, and has mostly been replaced with concrete masonry units, which are stronger.
Structural clay tile can be brittle under certain circumstances. Earthquakes are especially problematic. Still, structural clay tile is quite strong and is also extremely light compared to other building units. It is also fire-resistant.
 
Slide 4: Using structural clay tile
There are two types of structural clay tile, loadbearing, and non-loadbearing, which pretty much are just as their names seem. It shouldn&rsquo;t be used as the primary structure for tall buildings as it is not incredibly strong, although it can still fill in parts of the structure in these cases.
In walls, it can be used as a filler, meaning that other structural elements also hold up the wall. Steel is typical, but clay tile can also be filler within concrete.

As structural clay tile is fire-resistant, being used in walls for this property was fairly common. This is why it was popular in the early 20th century.
 
Structural clay tile can be glazed as well. This creates nice-looking and easily cleanable surfaces, which are also very strong. It looks similar to ceramics. However, after being glazed, it cannot be cut or drilled into. Glazed tile has to come in different shapes due to this.
