Slide 2: Concrete in Famous Buildings
The Pantheon&rsquo;s giant dome was constructed out of concrete. The Romans were the first to use concrete extensively, and they built many structures with it because of how convenient and strong it was, especially compared to the other materials of the time. (The pantheon dome is pictured to the right)
Most of the Panama Canal was built out of concrete. In particular, the large lock chambers that ships had to pass through were made from concrete. The concrete had to prevent water from leaking. 3.4 million cubic meters of concrete were used throughout the entire Panama Canal.
Like the Panama Canal, the Hoover Dam was constructed with concrete. Much of the dam is just one giant structure. This was the largest structure ever built from concrete, at the time. Throughout the project, about 3.3 million cubic meters  of concrete was used.
 
Slide 3: Why is concrete useful?
Concrete begins fluid, and once poured, sets and becomes hard. This is useful because it can be molded easily. It doesn&rsquo;t have to be hot to be a fluid, unlike steel, so it&rsquo;s very convenient.
It can be produced with different applications in mind, as it is a mixture. Different properties such as strength can be considered in the type of concrete used.
Concrete is very durable, and is incredibly strong in compression, although weaker in tension.
It is also highly fire-resistant, and inexpensive compared to materials like steel.
 
Slide 4: Using concrete
Concrete is probably the most popular building material in the world. It has many uses.
As shown with the Hoover Dam, it can be used to make very large structures. It&rsquo;s typically poured in layers. Because it becomes weak when overheated, large structures such as the Hoover Dam usually have pipes for water to flow through, to cool the concrete. Creating large structures is much cheaper and more efficient than using other materials.
Often, structures built with concrete also use steel. Steel is strong in tension, unlike concrete, so combining these can make a structure even stronger. This combination is very cost-efficient.

Concrete blocks can be used to make buildings. These are usually called concrete masonry units. They are typically hollow to make them more lightweight. (A concrete masonry unit is depicted)
 
The blocks are transported to the construction while already dry, so there is no need to let them set. There is also no need for a mold, which would be impractical with a tall building. Insulation and reinforcement are often added to the blocks, which make up the structure of the building. They must be grouted or secured in place with more concrete.
