Police officer selection and recruit training has as significant emphasis on making ethical decisions with high levels of integrity.  Ongoing training by senior officers and others may impact how these issues are trained.  Understanding how officers are trained on ethical decisions both formally and informally may impact the overall criminal justice system.  Officers are indoctrinated with the concepts of honesty, loyalty, and duty.  These concepts have an overall impact on how officers use their discretionary decision-making processes.

    • Of the categories listed – discretion, duty, honesty, and loyalty – which do you think is the most important?  Explain your answer.
    • Which do you feel is the least important?  Explain.
  •  Many law enforcement agencies see ethics terrain as a block of instruction in the academy.  What are your thoughts on that type of format, and do you think it is the best way to train?
