Each student will be required to complete one written assignment in this course.  The purpose of this assignment is to provide an opportunity for you to research and provide information about a specific disease/condition that you have been assigned.

 

Each student is responsible for writing and submitting a comprehensive report as described below. The required text for this course will be a helpful resource, however, successful completion of the written assignment requires students to go to outside resources in order to find out information about the disease/condition.  

 

The paper must not exceed 5 pages, not including title page and references, and it must be double-spaced with standard 1” margins and 12-point font.  If you exceed the five-page limit, only the first five pages will be read and graded.  Formatting should include page numbers along with a header and footer.  References: 4 sources are required for the assignment; one of these sources can be your textbook; at least two of the other sources must be from peer-reviewed journals. Sources should be current (published within the last five years).  Internet sources should not be used extensively for this assignment.  Sources and citations throughout your paper must be referenced using the APA style.  Papers should be written in a narrative format and should not include bullets.  Section headings are permitted.  You should paraphrase the information you have learned about and make sure to include intratext citationsDirect quotations are not permitted.

General Information about the Disease/Condition

In this section you will discuss and provide general information about the diagnosis you have been assigned.  The following areas should be addressed in this section:

  1. Etiology/Onset - Discuss the causes and underlying pathophysiology of the disease/condition, describe typical onset (e.g. gradual, sudden, age, gender) of the disease/condition.
  2. Typical Presentation/Course - Describe typical signs and symptoms of the disease/condition as well as its progression. 
  3. Diagnostic Tests – Identify and describe the tests used to determine diagnosis.

D.    Risk Factors - Indicate any factors that may make it more likely for someone to get the disease.

E.    Medical Treatment - Briefly indicate general course of medical treatment for the

disease/condition.  Include information on medications typically described for the diagnosis and 

potential side-effects of any of the treatment interventions.

F.    Precautions - Based on your knowledge about the disease/condition, what precautions would you need to be aware of and adhere to when working with this patient (e.g. avoid over fatigue, monitor blood pressure, etc)?
