Answer

It is often said that biotechnology is less of a tightly defined field than it is a nebulous, loose concept that encompasses a wide variety of techniques that utilize biological systems and processes for human benefit and use (Ponce 2009). Because it is an emerging and rapidly developing field of the modern era, it could even be said that it is a slogan, in a manner analogous to the “metaverse” in another area of technology, that promises to utilize and leverage living systems for human society in ways that have yet to be fully realized, or an aspirational vision of sorts that visualizes and anticipates the various ways in which biological systems may be exploited, though most of those ways have yet to be fully discovered and developed. Regardless of the uncertainties around where the field may go in the future, and how exactly all of its potentials may be realized, however, it is clear that it is an area of great potential benefit to humanity.

As fuzzy as some of the applicationary pathways of biotechnology may be, there are many examples of breakthroughs in science and technology that give evidence of how it could have highly positive repurcussions for our society. One of these is a biohybrid fish that was recently developed by researchers at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences and the Emory University School of Medicine (Burrows 2022). In a project led by Kit Parker, the Tarr Family Professor of Bioengineering and Applied Physics at Harvard, and with work contributed by several other researchers, the tissues of the human heart were used to create a highly efficient swimming robot fish. This was done with the intent of furthering our understanding of how these cells could be utilized in the future to create fully functional human hearts, which could be used to replace ones that are malfuncioning or diseased (Burrows 2022), thereby acting as a classic example of biotechnology. This project also served to demonstrate how biotechnology could have radical implications for the promotion of human health, because past work on this issue had focused on manually constructing replicas of the heart, in the way you might simply construct a nonliving object, whereas this novel biotechnological method drew on the actual biological physics of the heart and attempted to fundamentally understand how it worked. This enabled the researchers to create an object that worked with great functionality by miming fundamental biological processes while not necessarily trying to exactly copy the biological object itself in terms of its shape and size.

The robotic fish created in the study was propelled with the help of human stem-celled cardiomyocytes, thereby utilizing biological systems with the ultimate intent of understanding how they could be used to improve human health, and was inspired by the shape and swimming motions of the zebrafish, thereby utilizing biological systems for a more immediate goal and end. Unlike other devices created in the past, this biohybrid zebrafish had two layers of muscle cells, one on each of its tail fin and posterior body (Lee 2022). When one of these contracted, the other stretched, triggering the opening of a mechanosensitive protein channel, which in turn triggered a contraction, thereby generating an endless closed-loop cycle that propelled the fish forward. The feedback mechanisms used here mimicked the function of muscular pumps such as the heart. The researchers also inserted a pacing node that could pace the turns of the fin and create a sustainable rhythm, much like the human heart. One of the ways in which the fish differed from one created through non-biotechnological means was that it actually improved with age as its cells matured. The living processes of the cells enabled them to organically improve and grow themselves. By making use of the biological systems already existing in the natural world, the researchers were able to create a robot that could swim at the speeds of an actual zebrafish, and yet could be produced and manipulated for human use.

In the long term, the development of such machines will mean that we will gain a deeper understanding of how to particularly use biological systems to create technology of grander ends, such as organs that will be used by surgeons to save human lives. This will take further development, as simply allowing cells to grow will not necessarily lead to the desired results, and they will have to be manipulated to create the desired results, especially for systems as complex as the actual human heart. However, this study is a promising step toward that end, and demonstrates the potential for life forms to be used to benefit human health in novel and exciting ways.
