A catalyst is a chamber used by a catalytic converter to convert toxic gases such as carbon monoxide that are emitted by a car’s engine into safe gases. It is an important component of your car exhaust system.

Catalyst is a substance that helps to speed up a reaction, without getting consumed in the reaction. It basically helps to make a reaction happen via an alternate reaction mechanism/pathway that requires a lower energy of activation to go from reactants to products at the same conditions (thermodynamically favorable ones). This makes the reaction faster. In car exhaust, we have harmful gases that cause a lot of pollution like nitric oxide, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons. We need to convert these into substances like carbon dioxide and water vapour by means of chemical reactions. We use a catalyst like Pt to do so at a fast rate when car is moving (see reactions below).
