Question

How is sociology important to society?

Answer

How is sociology important to society?
Sociology is a field of study that looks at social life both past and present to understand human behavior and how it has gotten that way. It is a discipline that addresses not only the physical world but also, more importantly, humanity. Sociology deals with every aspect of human behavior, which includes social behavior, as well as attitudes, emotions, cognition, personality, and other aspects. The entire concept of sociology was first seen in 1843 and later on developed. The word sociologist came from the Greek word “sos” for sound and “logos” meaning wisdom (Porter, 1980).
Sociology offers many lessons, such as the importance of communication (and non-verbal). Through this understanding of communication between males and females, couples can work through their own feelings and understanding. Sociology also discusses the need for intercultural interactions and communication. Intercultural communication can be said to be the ability to express ideas and feelings to people of all races and cultures. Another major concept of sociology is the necessity for a healthy relationship between the self and the environment, known as ecology. This argument has been used by many people to try and control or improve social relationships and understand that an individual should always interact with his/her environment to maintain a healthy relationship between them and theirs. An example of such interaction would be a young couple working together as they go about their daily schedules (Porter, 1980). Another major concept of sociology is conflict, which will be discussed in greater detail in this paper.
Sociologists have studied all concepts of sociology and have come up with various theories that explain the phenomena. For instance, Carl Rogers, one of sociology’s most prominent figures, believed that conflict was the key component that helps make societies sustainable (Porter, 1980). He believed that there are four stages of conflict that make people healthy and successful in society. These stages include; bargaining, compromising, cooperating, and creating conflict. The bargaining stage occurs when two or more groups come up with mutually acceptable solutions to a problem. The compromise stage occurs when all parties give in and come up with mutually acceptable solutions to a problem while the creation and fighting stage occurs when one party pushes the other away from a solution. There are many types of conflict that occur in social organizations in different ways. Conflict occurs in a myriad of ways. There are different types of conflict that may arise to initiate and sustain a dispute in any community. Different communities have different ways of achieving peaceful coexistence because there are different methods of solving problems that may affect everyone (Porter, 1980).
In my opinion, people have different reasons as to why they engage in conflicts and disagreements. Some people say that conflicts are inevitable in society. Others state that we are born with certain skills. On each side, there are some who believe that the way that people live affects how they interact with others. They believe that conflict with others may not always mean that they lead to violence. In reality, the fact that people use coercion and coercion and coercion means that someone does not know who the victim is. Sometimes they resort to violent acts to show power and authority to those around them. People are capable of making decisions, but not being able to resolve conflicts well (Porter, 1980). Another issue that psychologists have looked into is the role of emotion in communication. Emotion plays a huge role in promoting or minimizing conflict. A person may feel bad about himself because of something he saw or experienced, but the other person might think that the person has done a terrible thing in which he feels bad about. For instance, a couple may have decided that they will stop the marriage and get married, but the partner with whom he loves is now involved. If they make peace with this situation, they may decide not to follow through with the decision (Porter, 1980). Conflicts do not always occur or happen every day. Often times they arise due to the need for security and love. When people meet in intimacy, they often find that they share similar interests and goals. Also when dealing with another individual in close proximity, the other individual will feel threatened by him/her. This threat leads to them breaking up. So, if something happens to spark discord between them or someone else, the victim is likely to go to war against the aggressor (Porter, 1980). However, these conflicts don’t always bring bloodshed. Sometimes they occur because one person uses force while the other tries to use diplomacy and logic in dealing with the situation. For instance, I can relate to situations where individuals from different genders and cultural backgrounds disagree over an issue. Whenever I meet people who speak different languages that do not know me properly, he/they will tell me one thing on which the other person disagrees. If I tell him/her that I have known him/her for some time and there is no reason to me not knowing him/her better, he/she will tell me the opposite of what he/she thinks he/she knows me better. We have all experienced instances of people using intimidation tactics and bullying tactics. If the other person doesn’t mind the intimidation, he/she will ignore everything else and will respond aggressively. When it comes to conflicts, sometimes we are born with characteristics that compel us to respond violently and forcefully. Our intelligence, our talents, and our skills are not necessarily conducive to the conflicts that we experience in society. Instead, when we encounter situations of discrimination, harassment, or another type of assault, our innate sense of justice and conscience usually prevails us. As a result, we tend to react violently to any form of abuse (Porter, 1980).
Conclusions
Sociology provides many lessons to society. Through education, people learn to embrace diversity in themselves, their children, their places, or even the country they are living in. Although there are numerous schools all across the United States, as far as culture goes, some classes are geared towards cultural tolerance than others. Children need not be taught that there is a difference between racial and ethnic diversity, but rather, they need to be introduced to differences (Porter, 1980) like the manner in which people from diverse cultural backgrounds interact with each other. Another great idea that sociologists have talked about is conflict. One major insight from sociology’s perspective is the need for self-control and self-discipline. Self-control allows people to set limits and boundaries that can help them become successful in society. A person who can set boundaries and limits effectively becomes a good communicator, in addition to being able to set limits and boundaries. Those who also become effective communicators and the ones who set boundaries and limits, get more supportive relationships from their spouses, which ultimately leads to higher levels of productivity. Finally, it is important to note that we need to ensure that our interpersonal ties are strong because conflicts always have an impact on our psychological health. Individuals need to ensure their interpersonal ties are stronger so as to avoid conflicts.

Answer

Sociology is interested in social relationships not because they are economic or political or religious or legal but because they are at the same time social. Sociology study how the relations combine, how they build up smaller or greater systems and how they respond to changes and changing needs or demands. Therefore the study of sociology is essentially analytical.
Sociology because of its bearing upon many of the problems of the present world has assumed such a great importance that it is considered to be the best approach to all the social sciences. Giddings have rightly pointed out, 'Sociology tells us how to become what we want to be.'
Sociology studies society in a scientific way
Before the emergence of sociology there was no systematic and scientific attempt to study human society with all its complexities. Sociology has made it possible to study society in a scientific manner. This scientific knowledge about human society is needed in order to achieve progress in various fields.
Sociology throws more light on the social nature of man
Sociology delves deep into the social nature of man. It tells us why man is a social animal, why he lives in a group, communities and societies. It examines the relationship between individual and society, the impact of society on man and other matters.
Sociology increases the power of social action
The science of society assists an individual to understand himself, his capacities, talents and limitations. It enables him to adjust himself to the environment. Knowledge of society, social groups, social institutions, associations, their functions etc. helps us to lead an effective social life.
Sociology studies role of the institutions in the development of the individuals
It is through sociology that scientific study of the great social institutions and the relation of the individual to each is being made. The home and family, the school and education, the church and religion, the state and government, industry and work, the community and association, these are institutions through which society functions. Sociology studies these institutions and their role in the development of the individual and suggests suitable measures for strengthening them with a view to enable them to serve the individual better.
