This week's writing assignment

This week you read Gabriel Garcia Marquez's "Death Constant Beyond Love". Garcia Marquez writes using the style magical realism, where realistic details are intertwined with dreamlike sequences, abrupt chronological shifts, and complex, tangled plots. Some examples within the story are the paper butterflies and birds that come to life, the elaborate backdrop created for the Senator's campaign event, the rose, and the chastity belt. For this assignment, you will pick any scene within the story and write in your own element of magical realism. You need to be sure that the scene in which you are inserting your element of magical realism is clear. You also need to use the characters within the story rather than creating new characters.
