Buddhism and Hinduism Discussion

Question

Buddhism and Hinduism both originate in Northern India, and grow out of a common Vedic/Sanskrit culture. Yet, Buddhism becomes a religion with a wide reach, becoming important throughout East Asia, while Hinduism spreads more modestly, and primarily with the immigration and cultural spread. What are the different characteristics of these religions, do you think, that leads one to be a "missionary" religion and the other to not?
