Dolley Madison knew that the British really wanted to capture her when she became the president’s political partner. Since the British do not want any American to rule them. Another is that when the British went to burn the white house and she saved all the important U.S government documents together with the George Washington Portrait. This move made the British angry towards her more not only for having those but also for making a huge fuss about it publictly which exposed how cruel the British colonizers are.

The War of 1812 is one of the most crucial and important events in American History. On August 24, 1813, the British troops led by Major General Ross attacked Washington as a retaliatory against the American attack on Port Dover which is situated in Upper Canada. According to the White House Historical Society, President Madison had left the White House(It was called the Presidential Mansion at that time) to meet with his generals on August 22. After the British troops had won the Battle of Bladensburg they marched towards the Capitol Building. Dolley Madison who was checking the horizon with spyglasses noticed the British troops and alerted her servants to collect the important documents and saved one of the most iconic pieces of history- George Washington's full length Portrait from British troops.
