History

Question

Read and reviewing Donaldson's Duty Beyond the Battlefield in a 3-5 page review essay.

Historians review the works of our peers in academic journals as part of the ongoing discussion of the past. Your task is to review the book from the standpoint of a student of military history. Reviews follow a particular format, you can see the review I wrote last fall of a different book for the general outline (see class announcements). The ultimate goal of a review is to assess the quality of a book and its success in influencing its audience.

In your review, you should address at least two of the following sets of questions:

  • What is the book's argument? Is the argument effective? Are there any weaknesses or holes in the research?
  • How does this book advance our understanding of military history?
  • Who is the intended audience? Do you recommend it to others?
  • What kinds of sources did the author use to come to his conclusions? Are there any problems with the sources  used?
