One of the most important influences of case management occurred in the 1980’s in the form of client involvement (Woodside & McClam, 2018). Having the client take on a more significant part of what occurs in their lives will lead to more success and a more efficient process. Simply managing over them without their say will lead to a lack of motivation on both parts. The client will feel like their interests, strengths and abilities do not matter and the case manager will feel like the effort they are putting into the client is not being rewarded. A client feeling empowered can only make a positive contribution to their lives. The goal is to allow their strengths and abilities to lead the way. If that is the case, they are more likely to be successful and more likely to be able to help themselves in the future. It takes on a snowball effect for the client. Each step that they take that shows them what they can achieve by working together with their case manager will lead them into the next step and they will continue to progress from there. There may be missteps or complications along the way, but the case manager and the client should work together to get past those issues.

Another important influence is the change of the role of case manager (Woodside & McClam, 2018). All aspects and influences are important, but when it is down to the bare bones, the most important aspects are the client, the case manager and the relationship between them. The roles each of them plays and how they carry out those roles are what makes the entire process successful. The idea that the case manager does not view their role as a manager, but rather a coordinator, changes how they do their job. They view their role as the person who listens to the client, works together with them and coordinates the care and services for them. They are a facilitator to an improved life; guided by the specific needs and wants of the individual they are helping.

Just as case management has evolved from its origins, I believe that it will continue to evolve. Case management is based on the needs of individuals within society. Those needs and those individuals will always change, as will the resources to help them. I think case management will continue to be focused on the best interest of the individuals needing care. As time has progressed from the beginnings of case management, it has become increasingly client-based and I think it will continue to do so. I think technology will have a major impact on case management. Just has telehealth has expanded very recently, I think it will continue to be implemented in regards to case management. The most important part of its future I believe to be that the relationship between case manager and client will continue to be emphasized as a predictor of success and the clients will continue to be empowered to help in their own care.
