What if?

Question

The term “Red Team” began in the intelligence community (military and civilian) and is a group of people brought together to critically think about “what if” scenarios.  The purpose is to improve effectiveness by challenging assumptions, plans, and estimates, and to get others to go beyond their standard, or fixed, thinking (Geren & Casey, Jr., 2009).  Critical thinking is about challenging the assumptions that were used to come to a decision.

Let’s look at the following situation: While at work your boss pulls you aside and asks you to take care of an issue that a colleague of yours usually handles.  Your boss also asks you to work on this issue without involving your colleague.

  • What are some of the assumptions you would make in this situation? Why would you make these assumptions?
  • What are some questions you would ask yourself? Why are these the questions you would ask yourself?
  • What are some questions you would ask your boss? Why?
  • Compare and contrast your response with your peers.
