at the beginning of this term, i saw literature as a combination of stories and poems without understanding the way different genres build their content through distinct structural elements. the most important distinction i learned is that each genre presents meaning in a different way. in the poem do not go gentle into that good night, the poet uses form and repetition together with visual elements to express meaning through the repeated line “do not go gentle into that good night” (thomas). the tell-tale heart uses its story development through its main events and character perspective to show how the main character's unstable mind affects readers' interpretation of the story (poe). the importance of being earnest presents its story through character interactions and dialogue, which allow actors to show their characters' inner thoughts through their spoken words and physical movements (wilde). the process of reading each genre which requires its own method of reading and interpretation was made easier for me through my understanding of these distinct reading modalities.
  
the use of literary terms has greatly improved my ability to analyze and discuss literature. before this course, i often described texts in general terms, but now i can use specific vocabulary like imagery, irony, characterization, and point of view. the tell-tale heart shows how the narrator through the use of unreliable narration creates a story which builds up tension and suspense throughout the entire narrative. the narrator insists, “you fancy me mad. madmen know nothing” (poe), yet his detailed description of the crime reveals his instability. the application of this literary term enabled me to show how the story's meaning becomes dependent on the narrator's flawed view of reality. the study of death resistance through emotional delivery of do not go gentle into that good night required me to identify both repeated elements and spoken delivery patterns in the poem. the importance of being earnest stands as my preferred reading from the course material. through his use of satire and irony wilde established a social critique which maintained the play's entertainment value. the reading created an enjoyable experience through its humor which simultaneously presented deeper concepts about identity and societal norms. i found the tell-tale heart to be more difficult because its narrator used a confusing and intense vocal delivery. the process of understanding between reality and imagination proved challenging during the initial stages. i achieved a better understanding of the narrator's mental condition and the story's intention through the process of rereading and applying literary concepts such as point of view and characterization. the course enabled me to develop my skills from basic reading to advanced literary analysis through clear and confident understanding of all texts.
