Question

this is the poem https://www.poemhunter.com/poem/one-perfect-rose/

This week, we examine several ways to write about poems. You will work through summarizing and paraphrasing, moving into an analysis of the poem. Review the article on quoting, paraphrasing, and summarizing at Purdue OWL website:

For this week's discussion, choose one of the three poems assigned in this week's readings. Read all of them carefully, but choose the poem that intrigues you: you will be spending some time with it. Your goal will be to break it down by following a series of steps. These steps will help you develop the skill of analysis, which you will be doing in the longer paper assignment due this week.

Step 1, the Summary: Write a short summary of the poem. Be sure to include the main speaker and/or character(s) of the poem, the setting, the situation, the action (or point of view). Remember a summary is short: you are not rewriting the poem but capturing the main components of it.

Step 2, the Paraphrase: Write a paraphrase of the poem. You can go through the poem line-by-line, but you should not rewrite the poem line-by-line with synonyms for its existing language. See this guide Paraphrasing through Poetryfor an example of paraphrasing poetry.

Step 3, the Theme: Write a sentence or two identifying the poem's main theme. Remember also that the subject is what the poem is about while the theme is what point the poet says about the subject. Choose one or two key images that capture the main theme. Please watch this video "How to Find a Theme" in Learning Resources for this week.

Step 4, the Analysis: You can use some of the information you developed in the previous steps. Write a brief paragraph about the poem's form (narrative, dramatic, lyric), its rhyme scheme, use of meter, use of figurative language, use of tone, etc. Try to identify and apply as much of the poetic terminology to the poem that you can. In your paragraph, identify at least three literary concepts (such as rhyme, figurative language, etc.) and point out wherein the poem those concepts help to develop the main idea of the poem. Make sure that you include quotes from the poem.
