After you have read Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, you will construct a visual interpretation representing the themes contained in the piece.  Use the Brainpicking link below showing examples of Matt Kish’s illustrations of Heart of Darkness.
You will create one interpretation for each section of the book.  Your interpretations should include all of the following themes and express how the themes are represented in each section.  Each of your interpretations needs to explore the tension between racism and the indictment of European imperialism in Africa.

The write-up and explanation
Each interpretation requires a one-page, typed explanation of the choices expressed in the interpretation.  You need to describe how all the themes are covered, how the image explores the tension of racism v. European imperialism, and how it describes the section of the book the image represents.  You also need to explain why the three images together represent a cohesive representation of the book.

Exceeds:  Highly metaphorical image(s) representing all of the themes above; no literal interpretations of the novel were used; explanation was clearly written with no grammatical or spelling errors.
Exceeds/Meets: Combination of Exceeds and Meets criteria;
Meets:  Many images were literal interpretations of the novella; not all themes represented; written explanation could have been clearer; grammatical and spelling errors.
Needs Work: All images were literal interpretations; none of the themes are represented; written explanation was not clear.
