CASE STUDY WEEK 4
BURGLARY CASE STUDY 1
Facts: On August 24, 2006, Deputies were dispatched to respond to a house alarm. Two officers responded to the scene. The first officer found the rear door of the residence forced open. This officer had a K9 unit. The second officer on scene went to the front of the residence. While waiting to see if there were any pets at the residence a male walked out of the forced open rear door of the residence and when he noticed the Deputy and K9 unit he ran back inside. The officers began yelling into the residence notifying the individual that they were law enforcement and the suspect yelled back something unrecognizable.
Then the officers heard a garage door open and a car start up. The officers then observed the suspect sitting behind the wheel of a dark colored Ford Thunderbird. He was wearing a white dress shirt, dark colored pants, and bluish colored gloves. They noticed that he was a black male with narrow eyes. The officers approached the vehicle with guns drawn and the suspect immediately threw the car in reverse and busted through the garage door. The officers immediately began to pursue the suspect. They could only read three letters on the license plate.
The officers then ensued on a high-speed chase of the suspect and the suspect lost control of the vehicle and went off the road sideswiping a telephone pole and stopping the car in a ditch. The suspect then fled the accident scene and took off on foot into a cornfield. The officers chased the suspect through the cornfield with the help of the K9 unit. Other officers began to arrive on scene and canvas the area of the suspect. A wildlife officer also responded to the scene and spotted the suspect running into woods. Multiple officers responded to this area and the suspect was eventually found lying down in a creek. The suspect was handcuffed and taken into custody and read hisMiranda rights. The vehicle was impounded and inventory searched.
