Community and Evidence and Based Programs

Community based treatments tend to focus on people who suffer from substance abuse with limited access to services in underdeveloped areas more often than not. These services range from detoxification to after care and they often help coordinate other non-specialized services to help client maintain and function successfully. This type of program encourages behavior changes within the community (Unodc.org, 2015). An evidence-based program is based on experiment, evaluation, data, and statistics. The approach that an evidence-based program takes is to address certain areas of addiction and the consequences as a whole for the individual, family, and society. Evidence based offer services ranging from psychosocial to behavioral while teaching life skills and helping the client to set and achieve future goals. Community awareness is the greatest effort in reaching out to those in need. People need to get involved as a community and let those trapped in the cycle of substance abuse know that are not alone and there is help out there for them. Often times people will shy away from asking for help out of fear of being judged, among many other reasons but when they have a support system, or they know there is help available hopelessness begins to fade. I believe that when a community gets involved it becomes a mission to reach out to those who need help and there are many ways to orchestrate these attempts such as a community cook out or setting up a booth at the local county fair either way even the smallest attempt could change a life. After research as well as personal experience I know that there is help out there for those who want or need it but I always am aware that there are often obstacles they people feel stand in the way such as feelings of shame, guilt, and failure, lack of transportation to and from, and cost. I have been there so I know what it can entail. I never wanted to admit defeat when it came to alcohol abuse but in order to get treatment, I would have to do just that so for the longest time I failed to seek help. It was one person taking the time
to guide in the right direction that changed everything for me and could offer someone else the same freedom from substance abuse. This is why community involvement is so important. Once a person decides to seek treatment it then must be decided what form of treatment they need, and this would be done through an assessment. Behavioral treatments help understand the cause of high-risk behavior and give them tools to cope with high risk situations. Cognitive Behavioral therapy or CBT focuses on reducing problematic behavior associate with substance abuse and dialectical behavior therapy are for those who struggle with handling emotional and either have thoughts of self-harm or suicide (Epicenter.edu,2017).
In conclusion either type of program would be beneficial depending on the client because what works for one may not work for the other so whatever your individual needs are would determine which type of program you need and as mentioned before community awareness is a key factor of it all.
