Five Paragraph Essay
It can be hard for adults to find the time to go back to school, especially at the university level. On average, adults spend 2.8 hours each day watching TV and it is during this time they are expected to complete their academic work (BLS.gov, 2020). In this paper, I will state and explain the, pros, cons, Christian perspective, and realistic application of adults returning to college.
Pros
There are many pros that are the result of adults returning to college. The first pro is that by having a college education the individual has a better chance to get the job they want. In fact, the main reason that adults do decide to go back to college is to increase their job opportunities. One article even stated, “College graduates see 57 percent more job opportunities than non-graduates, and it is estimated that, by 2020, two-thirds of all jobs will require postsecondary education” (Joubert, 2020). Another pro is that college prepares and refreshes students with many skills that are necessary in life. These skills include, logical thinking, time management, interactive skills, and teamwork capabilities. The last pro that I will mention is the fact that many networking opportunities are available through a college institute. Although the adult may not initially know it, they may form relationships at college that could affect many aspects of their life.
Cons
Just as there are pros to returning to college, there are also cons. One con is the issue of time constriction. Many adults are extremely busy already and by adding college work to their schedule they are increasing their likeliness of overworking themselves. By overworking themselves they are exposing themselves to many deeper problems which can include, job stress, burnout, family strains, and personal health issues. The next con that I will discuss is the financial constraint. Returning to college will generate new expenses for the individual that they will have to pay for on top of all their previous expenses. Financial constraints create many more issues that reach further than the financial facet of one’s life, including family issues (Whitney, n.d.).
Christian Perspective
Now that we have observed the pros and cons of returning to college as an adult, it is time to look into the Christian perspective of this subject. Is there ever a time to stop learning? Christ never gave an end for when we stop learning about our faith or even any worldly matter (such as college subjects). We have been commanded to do the will of the Father (Matt. 7:21) until we no longer have the physical opportunity. Secondly, many Christian adults may return to college to receive preparation for a job that will enable them to share the Gospel more effectively. Also, even if they return to college to improve their career in the secular world, they are still setting themselves up to reach more people through that job position. The job is the vehicle that we can use to preach the Gospel, as we have been commanded (Matt. 28:19-20).
Application
Although I am not a returning adult student (I am 15 years old), I have seen multiple adults return to college. In fact, my own dad returned to college here at GCU and obtained a degree in Leadership and Ministry. Also, when I attended a previous college and even here at GCU, most of my peers are returning adults. Returning to college is a decision that many adults make for many different reasons. As Christians, we can use our academic education to enhance the ministry of Christ in our personal life. There are pros, cons, and even a Christian perspective to adults returning to college.
