Annotated Bibliography
Thesis: Due to the mismanagement of funding and the use of military force, the efforts of the United Nations peacekeeping and human rights missions, to protect and promote long-term action of human rights in war torn countries has been unsuccessful.
What I hope to get out of this research: Through this research I hope to learn and provide useful information on The United Nations peacekeeping and human rights missions and to point out what is working and not working in their mission to protect and promote long term-human rights, particularly in war-torn countries. I hope to gain and provide a better understanding to why those in war-torn countries still suffer from economic hardship and why their rights as humans are not being met, considering all the efforts that have been done by the UNPK, especially because there is so much time and money that has been spent to do so. Through this research I also hope to come up with ideas and solutions to the human rights issues people face in war torn countries.
Why is this topic important: People living in war-torn countries are most likely to experience human rights issues. The UN has recognized this, which is why they created the peacekeeping and human rights organization. Although, their efforts tohelp countries torn by conflict, to create the conditions for lasting peace in war torn countries has not been successful. It is important to look at the UN and its peace keeping and human rights organization, because they are the largest, most familiar, most internationally represented and most powerful intergovernmental organization in the world.

The United Nations peacekeeping main website provides me with all the information I need to know about the United Nations peacekeeping and human rights organization. The website states all the goals and missions, work, documents, and resources of the UNPK. This txt will ultimately not only provide me with a better understanding of the United Nations, but it will also provide me with accurate information coming directly from the source.
Hesford, Wendy S. Spectacular Rhetorics: Human Rights Visions, Recognitions, Feminisms. Duke University Press, 2011.
In this book the author Wendy Hesford examines the ways in which human rights organizations, artists, and scholars use visual representation in order to bring attention to human rights atrocities that are occurring in the world. She also focuses on the pros and cons of the rhetorical context of human rights organizations. Throughout the book, Wendy argues for more social responsibilities and economic needs of those who suffer from human rights. In this book the author points out the pros and cons of human rights organization which I will use to better help my argument. Also, the argument of focusing more on economic, social and familial needs correlate with my own arguments.
Paul Collier, Anke Hoeffler, Greed and grievance in civil war, Oxford Economic Papers, Volume 56, Issue 4, October 2004, Pages 563–595, https://doi.org/10.1093/oep/gpf064
The author investigates the causes of civil war, by using data sets of wars during 1960–99. The author also argues that rebellion is caused by severe grievances like inequality, lack of political rights or ethnic and religious divisions in society. I will use this txt to better understand civil war and what may be the causes of it.
Petersen, R. (1993). A community-based theory of rebellion. European Journal of Sociology, 34(1), 41-78. doi:10.1017/S000397560000655X
In his article, the author Peterson writes about oppression and exploitation of those that live in war-torn countries. He argues that normal life for human beings has consisted of small groups of people taking advantage of larger groups of people. He points out the reasons for this and what gets people going to rebel. I will use this txt in my paper to point out reasons for why people rebel and what their needs are before they even get to the point of rebelling against those that control them.
Gennarini, Stefano, et al. “Internal UN Documents Show Financial Mismanagement at UNFPA - C-Fam.” C, c-fam.org/friday_fax/internal-un-documents-show-financial-mismanagement-at-unfpa/.
This article is an investigative report that points out how the United Nations have been misusing funds. The document points out key details and documents to back up its research. I will use this txt to help back up my argument of how the United Nations have misused and mismanaged the funds that they receive.
Kalyvas, S. N. (1999). WANTON AND SENSELESS?: THE LOGIC OF MASSACRES IN ALGERIA. Rationality and Society, 11(3), 243–285. https://doi.org/10.1177/104346399011003001
In this article the author uses a rationalist framework to investigate the issue of large-scale violence against civilians within civil wars. He does a case study of Algeria and the civil war they went through, which is also a country that the UNPK has missioned in. I will use this txt also as a case study and use Algeria as an example of how the UNPK mismanaged time and money when dealing with human rights efforts and peace building within Algeria.
Walter, B. (1997). The Critical Barrier to Civil War Settlement. International Organization, 51(3), 335-364. Retrieved April 27, 2020, from www.jstor.org/stable/2703607
In this article the author explores civil wars and the successful and unsuccessful negotiating process that follow. The author argues that civil war opponents do not want to negotiate settlements because opponents will need to give up all war equipment and military force, especially with no neutral police force and legitimate government. The author points out many underlining issues in which civil wars are fought and argues that peace treaties that are suggested is not enough. I will use this txt to back up my argument in how the UNPK organizations efforts to bring peace to war-torn countries is not enough. And will point out better solutions for long term peace and human rights.
