The Assignment: By the end of the project, you should be able to identify, define and explain the characteristics of a critical thinker as well as the benefits to being one. Finally, you will choose at least three of these characteristics and discuss in a well-developed essay the ways you shall utilize them.
Why We Do This:As a subject, Critical Thinking is thinking about thinking, learning how we can become more logical, analytical and skilled at communicating while also being passionate and curious, among other traits. As a discipline, Critical Thinking is a way of life, a practice that helps people to navigate a fast-paced and increasingly complex world. This project itself is an exercise in critical thinking. In fact, one will find the phrase occurring in the majority of college syllabi as well as many job descriptions; learning and writing about and mastering this subject prepares a person for a productive, successful and meaningful adult life.
How We Do This:Over the next four weeks, you will perform research into the essential characteristics of a critical thinker, the benefits of its practice and well-known examples of critical thinkers. We will share our findings in class as well as view some online resources, including a classic movie, Twelve Angry Men (1957). At the end of the research period, you will have one week to work on a rough draft of the essay topic, revise and edit and then compose the final version.
Week One:Twelve Angry Men + a general discussion of Critical Thinking
Week Two: the characteristics of a Critical Thinker
Week Three: the benefits of critical thinking
Week Four: examples of critical thinkers
