Students will develop a document that can be utilized by any novice within the healthcare arena to guide them in improving the quality of care and delivery within the organization. This guidebook must be an authentic document, such as a typed document or PPT presentation that can provide basic information, guidelines, and examples for starting and implementing an improvement project. It should include, but not limited to the following:
a) Purpose and Objectives
b) Background Information
c) Steps/Guidelines (how to start, selection of a model to use such as the plan, do, act and check model (PDCA) or six sigma.)
d) Useful Measurements/Evaluation Tools (such as Affinity diagram, Causal loop diagram, Cause-and-effect diagram (or fishbone diagram or Ishikawa diagram).
e) Implementation Process
f) Example of an authentic project (examples to use: improving the emergency wait times at a hospital or quality of healthcare at the primary care physicians office) utilizing the
steps/guidelines you have provided
f) References (at least three different sources – including your textbook materials)
Students should be creative in developing this document, which should answer fundamental questions that a novice would ask about quality improvement projects, such as:
1) What do I need? / What should I include?
2) Where do I start? / What should the focus be?
3) Why is it important?
4) Are there any guidelines for doing this?
5) How do I determine what needs to be improved?
6) What tools do I use to collect and analyze data?
7) Whom do I involve during the process?
8) How do I implement the improvement?
Guidebook needs to be at least 8-10n
pages; however, refer to the rubric regarding how students will be graded. Students should avoid plagiarism (cut & paste from other sources without giving credit to the author).
Be creative!
