Part A Key Health Needs
The City of Melton is considered to be one of Melbourne's fastest growing municipalities with a population of 151,410 in 2017 and a projected population of 381,987 by the year 2041. An area of great concern is the health and wellbeing of Melton citizens. According to the City of Melton Advocacy Priorities (2017), when Melton was compared to inner-city areas, it ranked lower across a range of health and well-being indicators. Residents of Melton are believed to be some of the most vulnerable for healthcare issues. As a matter of fact, almost 47% of residents experience at least one chronic disease (Melton City Council, 2017). In a population health report, Melton had significantly higher rates of colorectal cancer, stomach cancer, and obesity which raises the risk for other conditions such as, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, sleep apnea and osteoarthritis. In addition, high levels of psychological distress were also reported (Healthwest, 2015). One of the major concerns is obesity; it is estimated that 58% of the citizens in Melton are overweight or obese (Melton City Council, 20133-2017). Because of the ever-growing population, City of Melton Council advocates for implementing additional healthcare facilities for citizens of Melton as well as upgrades to Western Freeway, and railway. An additional advocacy program, Daughter’s of the West, provides a free health program for all women aged 18 and over who live and work in Victoria’s West.
