Conflict arises because of many different factors, but mainly centers on the idea that each individual or party is attempting to protect and promote their own self interests. One of the most well-known stories of conflict comes from the Bible, when two women were fighting over one child and came to King Solomon to decide who would keep the child (1 Kings 3:16-28). Solomon proposes that the baby be cut in half, and then each woman would end up with an equal outcome. The true mother compromised, as she did not want to risk the life of her baby, whereas the other women agreed that the child should be cut in half. This mimics the story of the prisoner’s dilemma, as noted in the readings. Conflict can often be resolved through cooperation; however, in many cases, each individual or party would rather end up worse off versus budging on their standpoints or demands. Conflict occurs in many societal arenas, including our political system, war, viewpoints of societal issues like environmental issues or abortion, and occurs on an individual basis with our more immediate relationships. Although conflict can be prevented, it is a reality of existence, and for that reason, we need to be knowledgeable of theories to resolve conflict when it occurs.

In a paragraph, provide a scenario where conflict is present. This can be a personal example of you in conflict with another individual or group, or a societal example of conflict (war, political ideologies, tension between cultures, etc.). Discuss what has caused the conflict, and present each side’s ideas and interests.

Drawing from the four peacemaking strategies(Contact, Cooperation, Communication, and Conciliation) write a paragraph for each peacemaking strategy, exploring how you could apply the strategy to help resolve this conflict effectively. If a strategy does not seem applicable in your scenario, discuss what barriers are present in the conflict itself that would not allow for the peacemaking strategy to be effective.
