Question

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Romans 13:1 NIV

For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Ephesians 2:10 NIV

Following program policy will be a large part of any human service professional’s experience. We are put in a place to uphold the authority of governmental laws and regulations, while at the same time help to serve the purpose that He has designed in helping others. Although it may be a frustrating experience, our Christian belief system allows us to positively influence government to promote a sense of justice for the oppressed.

One important idea to keep in mind is that government and Christianity do not always align; in fact, many believe that the two should be kept separate. However, we can always tailor our arguments to appeal to social and ethical rights, something that is not only understood on a religious basis, but from a human rights basis, as well.

Overall, our role as human services professionals very much involves obeying the rules of governmental officials that He has ultimately appointed. However, as we are also His appointed ones, we too have the responsibility of promoting the welfare and meeting the needs of those we serve in this helping field. In this responsibility, it is possible you may, under some circumstances, need to question the authority of those engaged in policy design.

  • How can the Christian balance working professionally under the laws and policies of the land with his or her own faith-based beliefs? Consider the importance of prayer and seeking wise counsel, and describe how you might proceed in resolving a conflict between professional policy and Christian responsibility.
