JS week 5 first discussion

Question

Objective: Articulate current responsibilities and services provided by case managers.

Objective: Propose solutions for current challenges within the context of case and care management. The case manager/client relationship is delicate. On the one hand, case managers are trying to create rapport and get buy-in from their clients regarding their treatment plan. Case managers are good listeners and use empathy as well as praise to support their clients. As a result, clients may begin to rely on their case managers as they see this person as someone who can help navigate life’s problems.

Case managers may need to reiterate that the purpose of their services is to help the client become independent. Learned helplessness can be a result of over-dependence on the case manager. Likewise, case managers often have large caseloads, and burn-out can quickly develop if clients become too dependent. Both situations are not conducive to positive client outcomes.

Instructions

For your initial post, you will need to do some background work. Think about how you might encounter (or have encountered) difficulty establishing boundaries with a client. (If you have a real-life work example, please do not use identifying information). If you do not have a real-life work example, think about a scenario that you might encounter and find someone to role-play that scenario – you will be the case manager and will need to establish clear boundaries with this “client.”

  • Share your “setting boundaries” example with the class. Provide a brief background with non-identifying information about the scenario, whether it was a real or potential situation and your reflection of the experience.
  • Briefly describe your abilities in setting boundaries and reflect on your identified strengths and weaknesses. Are you following the ethical guidelines of beneficence, non-malfeasance, autonomy, justice, and fidelity?
  • Devise one strategy for creating clear, professional boundaries in the workplace.
  • Conclude your initial post with scripture that best summarizes your thoughts about creating healthy boundaries.

This is a "post-first" discussion. You will need to post your initial post in order to see peer posts.
