Question

  • Read II Samuel 12:1-7

This event came after David became sexually involved with Bathsheba, a woman who was married to Uriah, one of David’s faithful soldiers (II Samuel Chapter 11.) Bathsheba became pregnant. After this David had his military leaders leave Uriah isolated in the midst of battle so that he would be killed. Later, God sends Nathan to confront him.

Nathan must confront the most powerful man in Jerusalem, King David, who could have him executed. From this passage, we learn some good lessons about communication.

  • Nathan was willing to do the right thing. He followed God’s command.
  • He knew his audience. David had been a shepherd.
  • Nathan created a parable to make his point.
  • Nathan waited until David reacted to the story. Nathan knew that this was the moment of truth.
  • He confronted David about his behavior.
  • Because Nathan confronted David in a way that he could receive the message, David was able to change.
