Question

REPLY TO THE DICUSSION BELOW. REQUIRED 150 WC AND 2 SCHOLARY REFERENCES

Edward is an excellent student and an excellent patient with his counseling. The client states, that he knows he will need assistance in applying for college, finding somewhere to live, developing a support network, and securing transportation. He is open to the help I could provide him in reaching those resources that will improve and help him advance with both his personal, studies and future career. The goals that will have the most impact on Mr. Edward's life both currently and future are goals that will encourage self-growth and social growth. Because the client has no known living relative these goals will be for the betterment of the client's life. Hopefully, these goals will help the client develop dependently.

The first goal would be to find Mr. Edward somewhere to live during his college years. The client is legally blind, so any living arrangements must be arranged around his disability. Because he is a college student and has a disability, the best living arrangement would be living on the college campus. This would help limit the amount of transportation that would be needed to get to class, open the client to making friends, and help make his college years easier. One internal resource would be requesting that the client receive a room as close to his classes as possible, and as close to the ground floor as possible for both the client's safety and well-being. One external resource that can be used is getting the client housing that is as close to the college as possible. The housing can be a group living arrangement, where several college students live together. Several colleges have off-campus housing for students, and they are paid the same way college dorms are paid. A time limit, of one school year, would be placed on the living arrangements to ensure that the client's needs are being met, as well as to change the living arrangements if the need comes up. His living arrangements have a high possibility of being paid for with scholarships and funds for those who are blind

A second goal for Mr. Edward will be building a support network. The client has no known living relatives, so building a network will be important to make sure that the client continues to advance in his adjustment to living on his own. As well as making sure he builds a group of friends and people who can help him currently and in the future. Mr. Edward will participate in a student club three times a week, in order to speak and interact with fellow students on campus. One internal resource would be joining the computer club on campus. Several colleges have clubs and actives that students can take part in during the week, and joining a club that's similar to his degree will provide more resources and knowledge towards it. This would be a network with the same interest and passion as the client, this would provide the client a sense of community. A campus computer club would provide the client with a group of students that can help towards his degree, as well as introduce him to other schoolmates. One external resource for this goal would be joining the National Federation of the Blind, this resource would connect Mr. Edward to other students in the same situation as himself. This would provide him a sense of community and a place to go to find several resources for other difficulties he may face in the future.

The third goal for Mr. Edward would be securing a form of transportation. The client will need transportation for both his educational and personal life. The client is legally blind meaning “Legally, blindness is defined as less than 20/200 vision in the better eye with glasses (vision of 20/200 is the ability to see at 20 feet only what the normal eye can see at 200 feet)” (The Free Dictionary, n.d.), which mean the client has a small amount of vision. Because of this, the client will take part in both self and public transportation for two months. One internal resource would be to arrange a service dog to help the client to his classes. If the client is living on campus then it would be easy for the client to walk to class, with the aid of a walking stick and some level of vision the client can easily walk to and from class. The service dog would help him navigate the school grounds for a few months until he becomes familiar with it. One external resource would be a car service such as Uber or Lyft if the client chooses to not live on campus. These are mobile phone car services, meaning the client can order a car service himself without the help of a third party. These services are safer than the public bus because the car will pick up the client at his home and take him to his precise destination. These services are cheaper than private car services and are faster for his growing needs. When it comes to paying for transportation and everyday needs. Because the client is underage and both of his parents are dead he is able to receive a social security income. “A child may get a Social Security benefit equivalent to half of the parent's full retirement advantage or disability advantage. If the parent is deceased, the child is eligible to receive up to 75% of the parent’s full retirement benefit” (Friedberg, 2020).
