Discussion--Victims of War

Question

The Second World War is often celebrated as "the good war" in American historical memory.  However, the United States and its allies committed several atrocities against Japan and Germany.  Likewise, the Germans and the Japanese also committed horrendous war crimes.  Using specific examples from the assigned readings below, discuss whether or not we can consider the German and Japanese people victims in this war (and if so, does that make America the perpetrator?) or do German and Japanese war crimes preclude consideration of those nations' sufferings?
