Objective 2: Explain how the counseling profession has evolved from a historical perspective in our society. The goal of this activity is to acknowledge the social improvements that have been made as a result of human services. When entering any profession it is helpful to know and understand all about present practices. To gain a better sense of this, we must often reflect upon the past. In the helping field, the past history of the field can give an invaluable perspective on how changes in society shape the methods of helping today.

• Read Chapter 2 of your course textbook by Mandell & Schram
• Explore one outside academic reference beyond your course textbook, Bible and dictionary to include in your power point.
• Develop a 6-10 PowerPoint slide deck that tells the story of how the helping professions have evolved from past to present.
• To achieve maximum points for content and analysis, the following elements need to be thoroughly addressed:
  • Explain how exploring the past history of helping gives insight into how changes in society shape the methods of helping.
  • Show a timeline of key events that led to formalizing the helping professions
  • Describe when the human service field began and how it has grown since.
  • Summarize impressions of the history of the profession.
  • Have at least one academic resource in your presentation beyond the course textbook, Bible and dictionary.
  • Be sure to include animations and pictures/clip art in your slide deck (video links are optional).
• Ensure that your slide deck includes a title slide and Reference slide if supporting sources are used.
