Philosophy Of Ethics Questions
---1)
1. What is the purpose of moral theory as described by the author? Has he missed any essential ingredients? Do you agree with his reasons that moral claims need not be arbitrary or capricious? Explain.
In Sumner’s perspective, Philosophy and other disciplines like ethics and political science are a secondary product of moral theories. The purpose of moral theory is to find and apply the mechanism required to know what is right or wrong. The folkways are the source of all moral theories. There is no universal answer on what is right or wrong only what can be accepted or not by the folkways. The final purpose and effect of a moral theory is to shape the society is applied on. The legal system is a consequence of moral values. I agree with Sumner. Moral claims need not to be arbitrary or capricious. Moral claims are accepted as right and positive while an arbitrary or capricious perspective means that a moral claim is shaped and interpreted for an individual or social group’s advantage. In more simple words, a moral claim is uniform and universally valid. For example, one parent has two cakes and two children. If the parent would give both cakes to one child, the other will consider the decision as unfair. The decision would be arbitrary and capricious. The folkways tell that brothers have to share. The right decision is to give each child one piece of cake. This is why, a moral claim cannot be arbitrary or capricious. If it would, it would not be a moral claim anymore but a personal desire or aspiration.

1. What do you make of Sumner's arguments for relativism? Is his argument sound? Strong?
Sumner considers mores and moral claims as relative concepts. To evaluate and rank a moral value, it has to be compared with something outside of the concept. Contrasting is a simple way to apply relativism. Sumner considers that something relative can turn in something absolute by generalizing it. His arguments are strong and I agree with them Relativism can turn in absolutism when everyone agrees that something is right or wrong, using all measure and comparison instruments. For example Killing someone is immoral. Because the entire society is against it, it has become illegal. Killing one man or two is already a crime and all our social values are against it. This is not a relative fact anymore. Religion, Sociology, Politics, and Ethics agree that.
2. Is Shaw's argument for grounding some set of universal moral principles on human nature and need convincing? Explain.
Human nature acts like a filter in considering and evaluating universal moral principles. If someone considers a decision as being the right one, it does not mean that the decision will be necessarily right. The simplest example is that in the past, technology and innovation changed the way we consider something as right or wrong. In Shaw’s view, the universal moral principles are relative and not absolute. Changing social values and evolution is in human nature. Ancient and Middle Ages mankind considered that the Earth is flat. Modern mankind knows that the Earth is round. Shaw’s argument is based on the “The Kantian perspective on Autonomy and Respect”. Anyone should treat another individual and himself with the respect it deserves. The way people interact between them is a source for universal moral principles. With autonomy, each one can change and adapt to the universal moral principles. The human nature contains respect and autonomy. The level and intensity of this values will show in which way, an individual is capable or willing to respect the moral values. Shaw’s argument do not need more convincing work. His examples are simple and easy to understand.
3. Does tolerance necessarily devolve into an "anything goes" view of morality? Discuss. You may want to define what YOU mean by tolerance.
“Anything goes” is a principle extracted from moral nihilism. Moral values are not absolute and not mandatory as life is meaningless. In my opinion, tolerance (and tolerating someone) is a form of respect. Respecting other ones right to autonomy. The reverse is also applicable. Each of us is expecting tolerance in return. In the same time, tolerance should not devolve in “anything goes”. The legal system is a set of moral values and rules imposed by the rulers and sometimes agreed by most of the society (in a democracy). Because of it or because of personal beliefs, you cannot tolerate someone doing something illegal or immoral. If someone steals in front of you, reporting him is a responsible thing to do. If a good friend steals in front of you, friendship and rightness are put in a balance. The strongest personal belief will result in tolerating or not the felony.

1. Please consider Rachels' claims on pp. 75-76 (item #3). What do you make of his contention that ethical egoism is at its core inconsistent since its basic tenet cannot be universalized?
Ethical egoism cannot be universalized because when someone is acting in his best interest, ignoring the negative impact it might have on his peers, the reverse is not applicable. An egoist individual would not want others to treat him in the same way. If anyone would act with ethical egoism, the social balance is destroyed. Everyone will do only what it likes or wants, exchanging public and social order with anarchy. In political studies, anarchy is when chaos replaced the public order. Chaos means no moral or ethical values. In such environment, egoism cannot develop because of the general state of intolerance. Another simple argument is that egoists will expect others to be altruists. Egoism is connected and it depends on altruism to develop and manifest.
2. Can you think of modern examples of Plato's ring of Gyges?
Dictatorship is a good example of Plato’s ring of Gyges. In the last century, totalitarianism is the expression of doing something wrong or unfair when a dictator had the chance to do so. Adolf Hitler, Stalin, and other not so globally known dictators, used genocide to support their extremist ideas. Hitler mastered the Holocaust when he was sure that the German society will not penalize him for it. Stalin mastered the “Great Terror” after he seized total power and eliminated anyone threatening his leading position. Besides genocide, Hitler attached other territories to Germany (Austria and Czech Republic) without suffering any punishment from the international community. The punishment came after the war was lost XXX the XXXXXXXX XXXXXX XX a XXXXXXXXXXX XXX those XXXXXXXXXX his XXXXXXXXX. XX was when XXX XXXXX of the ring XXX eventually lost.
