Germans in the United States
This paper particularly focuses on the demographics of the German population located in the United States. This population will include individuals that were born in Germany but currently live in the United States as official citizens and those that have a German descent. The paper analyzes data obtained from the American Community Survey. For a detailed analysis the data of the German population in the US will be put under comparison with the data of other two populations in the US. Namely, the native-born population and other foreign-born populations apart from Germans.
German Population in the United States
The United States boasts of a total population of approximately 327, 167 439 people. Out of this huge population the German-born American citizens only include 191, 412 individuals, which represents 0.06 percent of the total US population. This population is spread across the US. Appendix A maps the distribution of the German-born population across states in the US. Conversely, Appendix B maps the percentage of Americans claiming German Ancestry in 2018 according to the Census Bureau. The German-born population is densely populated in states in the North Eastern region of the United States. For instance, Iowa, Michigan, Ohio, New York, Indianapolis, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. Conversely, states such as Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Alaska, Wyoming, and New Mexico report a reduced population size of the German-born population.
